Vida Heydari Contemporary is pleased to present “Confluences” a group exhibition showcasing a mix of contemporary practices that highlight artistic experimentations at the intersection of painting, and photography. Bringing together a careful selection of practitioners, the showcase seeks to find points of fluidity, overlaps, and interconnections in merging otherwise two distinct techniques to reveal how each influences, and remoulds the other.
In engaging variously with light, texture, and composition in ways that disrupt traditional modalities of image-making in both painting, and photography, the showcased works not only reflect the shared, and evolving dialogue between these two historical forms, but also seek to reimagine the possibilities of contemporary art-making. In instances of figurative distortions, painting over the photos, staged abstractions, or graphic manipulation, one encounters a deliquesced visual vocabulary that introduces an ambiguity in the finality of medium, representation, perception, and materiality of the artworks. There exists, then, a necessary converging of the painterly with the photographic.
‘Confluences’ draws our attention to the important ways in which despite functional differences between the two art forms, there exist attributions for a synchronised act that allows for innovative avenues for creating and experiencing art.
